Not my Cross to Bear

Oil on canvas, completed October 2012.

This is a sport climb in Penitente Canyon in Colarado which goes up a corner on spectacular coloured rock. It has a reputation as a "dry mouther" as well as being one of the best "stemming or bridging" climbs in the area.

The reason I wanted to paint this was the fantastic body position of the climber where each limb is working hard at keeping the climber on the rock. I initially finished this piece in 2010 but was never really happy with the face so it sat in the studio for a while. In mid 2013 I felt able to redo the face and I'm now happy with the way it looks (as much as one can be). This work is available for purchase, please use the contact button to obtain further details.
